The store is well-stocked, easy to navigate, and full of the treasure-hunt surprises that make Trader Joe’s, well, Trader Joe’s. Prices remain refreshingly reasonable, especially in a world where grocery carts seem to require a second mortgage. What really stands out, though, is the staff. Friendly doesn’t quite cover it. Need help finding an item? They’ll not only point you in the right direction but often walk you there. Have a question about a product? Expect enthusiasm, recommendations, and perhaps the feeling that you’ve just consulted a personal grocery concierge. Whether you’re stopping in for a specific item or leaving with seventeen things you never knew existed, this Trader Joe’s delivers the experience with a smile. A fun place to shop, staffed by people who genuinely seem to enjoy helping customers.

Tanjung Aru Beach

If you're in Kota Kinabalu and only have time for one sunset spot, Tanjung Aru Beach should be at the top of your list. The sunsets here are simply spectacular, with ever-changing colors that make for incredible photos. What makes the experience even more enjoyable is the atmosphere. There is a lively buzz without feeling overwhelmingly crowded. During our visit, the beach was full of people enjoying the evening—families, travelers, and plenty of content creators filming Instagram reels and videos against the stunning backdrop. For us, the real joy was simply strolling along the shoreline, soaking in the peaceful, almost meditative ambiance, and of course taking far too many photos! A helpful tip: ask your Grab or taxi driver to drop you at Beach 1, then walk left along the beach. This stretch offers some of the best views and a wonderful perspective of the sunset as the sky transforms into a canvas of gold, orange, pink, and purple. A memorable experience for our last day and an easy recommendation for anyone visiting Sabah.

Here’s a polished Google Maps review that captures your experience: Narita Airport Terminal 2 is efficient, easy to navigate, and surprisingly comfortable for a long layover. We had a 12+ hour connection and spent most of the time in the Sakura JAL Lounge, with a bit of shopping and exploring in between. The terminal offers the usual mix of duty-free stores, luxury brands, and watch boutiques, but appreciated that the shops are centrally located and complemented by a mall-style food court with a good variety of dining options. The Sakura Lounge is spacious and thoughtfully designed across two levels. The upper floor is dedicated to dining, while the lower level houses showers, massage chairs, and sleeping rooms. One tip: if you plan to use a shower or rest room, reserve it immediately upon arrival, as demand is high and the queue is managed through an online booking system. The lounge facilities are excellent, but the food was the one disappointment. Compared with other international business-class lounges, the selection felt limited, especially for vegetarians. Even some basic continental breakfast staples such as cereals, bread options, and lighter vegetarian choices were noticeably absent. Overall, a very pleasant airport experience with excellent lounge amenities and a well-organized terminal that made a long layover far more enjoyable.

The Barbuda Express gets you between Antigua and Barbuda, but it’s far from a comfortable ride. The ferry is slow, and seating is challenging across all sections. There are three seating areas: • Lower-level indoor cabin with reasonably sized chairs, but it’s very difficult to move in and out, especially when the ferry is full. • Outdoor wooden benches are tight, and in rough seas you can easily get soaked by spray. • Top deck rocks significantly, and access is via very steep, narrow stairs — closer to a ladder than steps, making it uncomfortable and potentially unsafe for some passengers. That said, schedules are generally reliable, and there are few practical alternatives unless you own or charter a yacht. Functional, but uncomfortable — plan accordingly, especially if seas are rough or you have mobility concerns.

I took so many photos and videos in the viewing gallery that my iPhone overheated, threw up the white flag, and temporarily quit on me—apparently even smartphones can’t handle that much molten-glass excitement. The history is fascinating, the craftsmanship hypnotic, and the coffee surprisingly excellent (a welcome recharge since my phone refused to). The surrounding craft stores are a creativity jackpot—beautiful displays, clever designs, and enough tempting goodies that “souvenir” quickly escalated into “full shopping expedition.” We left with bags full of treasures and zero remorse. A must-visit spot for anyone who likes art, sustainability, or simply watching glass become magic—just give your phone cooling breaks. Outdoors, peackocks and the yellow weaver birds abound.

I stumbled upon CafeX near baggage claim and felt a strange mix of curiosity and sympathy for the poor robot barista—looked like it had just finished a long-haul flight itself and stretching and flexing its muscles. Out of sheer empathy (and a slight caffeine withdrawal), I scanned the QR code and ordered a Pumpkin Chai Latte. The ordering was slick, but watching the robot “work” was the real entertainment. Imagine a bored hibachi chef performing with invisible knives—equal parts acrobatics and existential crisis. It stretched, spun, and flexed its metallic arm like it was auditioning for “So You Think You Can Brew?” The latte? So so. A bit pricey, but you’re paying for the show… and perhaps for the robot’s therapy fund. Worth trying once, if only to witness the future of mildly depressed automation in action. It’s a convenient base whether you’re here for work or leisure. The staff really stands out — consistently friendly, attentive, and professional, making the stay feel welcoming. Rooms are comfortable and in line with international Sheraton standards. Situated right next to two modern malls, La galleria and del Sol (and of course not to forget the ubiquitous pharmacies(!) Highlights include the rooftop pool and bar, offering sweeping views over Asunción — a perfect spot to unwind. The restaurant downstairs serves a generous breakfast buffet with plenty of variety, while the club lounge adds another layer of comfort for those with access. Ask for a higher-floor room for the best city views and make time for a sunset drink on the rooftop.

We visited Paseo La Galería to experience shopping in Paraguay and found it to be one of the most impressive malls in Asunción. The architecture is striking, with a multi-level design that feels both modern and inviting. A garden walkway connects the levels, giving the unusual experience of walking outdoors while still inside a shopping complex. The mall features a broad mix of international and local brands such as Zara, Calvin Klein, Adidas, Puma, Levi’s, and Tommy Hilfiger, alongside smaller Paraguayan boutiques. We found a good computer backpack with pulsak brand for a decent price. The food court is stylish and varied, ranging from casual fast food to sit-down dining. A fun surprise was spotting Yogurberry, essentially a clone of Red Mango from the U.S., with the same frozen yogurt concept under a different name. For families, there’s a kids’ arcade and a cinema on the top floor, making it easy to turn a shopping trip into a day’s outing. One of the highlights is the glass sash elevator, which connects the upper levels of the mall to the adjacent hotel side, giving a futuristic, tunnel-like ride with sweeping views. Overall, Paseo La Galería is more than just a shopping mall — it’s a destination to shop, eat, stroll, and be entertained, and stands out as one of the highlights of modern Asunción.

There’s a mini-market with snacks, general merchandise, and a Punt Farma pharmacy (because one should never be too far from a pharmacy in Paraguay😊). Coffee comes from a small machine using K-cups — basic, but it does the job. The station also features the ECOP Grill, a sit-down option for a more filling meal if you want more than just chips and soda. Bathrooms were clean and well-maintained, a big plus for road travelers. Not a destination in itself, but a solid and practical stop — especially before heading deeper into the Chaco, where services can be very limited. There was even a nice friendly dog curious about the visitors (not sure if he is a permanently employed here)

We visited on a Saturday night when the restaurant was packed, and despite not having a reservation, the staff was welcoming and went out of their way to accommodate us — a real plus for service. The food came out fresh and flavorful, with a decent balance between authenticity and local adaptation. Portions were generous, and the menu covered both Thai curries and Indian staples. This is a cheerful little spot in San Bernardino, La Casita is the kind of ice cream shop that instantly draws you in on a warm day. Even the smallest size comes with two scoops, which feels generous. All the classic flavors are here, but our picks were passion fruit (maracuyá) — tart, refreshing, and very Paraguayan — paired with chocolate chip, creamy and familiar. Pricing was quite reasonable, and it was good to see that credit cards are accepted, which isn’t always the case in small shops on the lake front. There’s no dedicated seating area inside, but the surrounding area is full of benches and shaded spots where you can enjoy your ice cream at leisure. We visited off-season and had the shop almost to ourselves, but it’s easy to imagine this place being mobbed in the summer months, given its location and appeal. A solid stop for cooling off!

Mirador Bella Vista I

In the historic center of San Bernardino, the Escalinata de la Virgen Aparecida rises with more than 100 tiled steps, decorated in colorful mosaics that celebrate the artistry of the Guaraní people, who once inhabited the valley of Lake Ypacaraí. At the top there is an impressive 12-meter statue of “Our Lady Aparecida del Lago”, created in 1994 by artists Roberto Hornung, Mónica Delssin, and Patricia Ayala. The site is meant as both a viewpoint and a place of devotion. That said, the climb isn’t easy. The steps are high and uneven, and some near the top are in poor shape. The panoramic view is partly blocked by trees, which diminishes the dramatic effect you might expect. Still, the combination of religious symbolism, art, and nature makes it a meaningful stop if you’re already in San Bernardino.

From the Costanera, you can also walk uphill into the town’s residential area, where you’ll find large, expensive houses with manicured gardens. Continue further up, and the climb rewards you with nice tree lines of the lake and surrounding valley. A Bit of History San Bernardino was founded in 1881 by German immigrants and soon became a summer retreat for Paraguay’s elite. Its mix of European influence and lakeside setting gave it a distinctive identity, and it remains one of the country’s most popular getaway towns. Continue further up, and the climb takes you to the topmost Mirador Bella Vista - be prepared to find the trees blocking the view of the surrounding lake though.

Estación de Tren de Pirayú

Pirayú’s station has been preserved as a museum of a bygone era. You’ll find the original tracks, weathered locomotive engine, signal equipment, and photographs that capture the heyday of steam travel in Paraguay. Walking the platforms feels like stepping into a ghostly chapter of history — silent now, but once bustling with movement and promise. It doesn’t take long to see (10–15 minutes is plenty), but it’s worth stopping if you’re nearby, especially if you’re curious about Paraguay’s forgotten rail past. A quiet, nostalgic site that blends industrial heritage with local history. There is not much information panels to help your visit on your own. The Railway Museum is a small reminder of Paraguay’s once-ambitious railway system. Paraguay was actually one of the first countries in South America to build a railway, inaugurated in 1861 under President Carlos Antonio López, linking Asunción with Paraguarí and later extended further south to Encarnacion. For decades, the trains were a symbol of modernization, connecting towns and trade across the country. Today, that golden age is gone. The railways suffered from decades of underinvestment, aging equipment, and lack of modernization. By 2010, regular train service was officially suspended, leaving only heritage lines and museum sites like this one to tell the story. There are some local handicraft vendors with beautifully woven merchandise in a unique style right next to the museum - you can browse and learn how they do it!

We had a lunch stop here. The restaurant is named after General Eduvigis Díaz, a Paraguayan national hero who distinguished himself in the War of the Triple Alliance (1864–1870), Eduvigis Restaurant in Pirayú combines dining with folklore performance in a very Paraguayan way. The setting feels designed for visitors — large dining hall, buffet spread, and a stage for the evening’s show. The buffet is strongly meat-centric, in line with Paraguayan tradition: grilled beef, stews, and sausages dominate. For vegetarians, options are limited to cassava, rice, spaghetti, simple salads, and condiments to balance the otherwise mild flavors (Paraguayan cuisine typically avoids heavy spice). The dance performance was the clear highlight, with colorful costumes and traditional choreography. The style we saw was very much an amalgam of European style adopted in a Paraguayan flair. It’s lively and enjoyable, though very much tourist-oriented, more of a showcase than a spontaneous cultural expression. Overall, Eduvigis offers a good introduction to Paraguayan food and dance traditions — best appreciated if you go in expecting a staged cultural evening (or the day time as we did) rather than a deeply local experience.

Mythical Museum Ramón Elías

About 30 min from Asuncion the Mythical Museum Ramón Elías in Capiata is one of Paraguay’s most unusual cultural stops — a place where myth, faith, and history converge. Created by the late artist Ramón Elías in the late 1970s, the museum preserves the figures of Guaraní mythology alongside religious artifacts and wartime memorabilia. Tragically, Elías himself only enjoyed his creation briefly before his death in 1981, but his vision lives on. His daughter has continued to maintain this museum. Like many small museums and churches in Paraguay, it’s not always open during the posted hours — we had to call the caretaker to unlock it, which is quite common. Once inside, the experience unfolds through three distinct rooms: • Room 1: Mythology – Sculptures of Paraguay’s legendary creatures like Pombero, Kurupí, Jasy Jateré, and Teju Jagua, each with their own stories. The handcrafted forms bring these tales vividly to life. • Room 2: Faith – Altarpieces, saints, and religious art from Paraguay’s Franciscan and Jesuit past. Unexpectedly, among them sits a framed picture of George Washington and two large carved guards from India — odd but striking inclusions in the mix. Also a picture of the Coat of Arms of Capiatá was designed by Ramón Elías himself. • Room 3: History – Photographs, weapons, and relics from the Paraguayan War and the Chaco War, grounding the myths in the reality of Paraguay’s struggles. The setting is rustic, with dim corridors and displays that feel more like stepping into the collector’s own world than a polished institution. That intimacy is part of its charm. A quick 30 minute stop to touch Paraguay’s folklore and history in one visit.

In the heart of downtown Asunción stands the National Pantheon of the Heroes, one of Paraguay’s most important landmarks. Originally designed in the 1860s by Italian architect Alessandro Ravizza, construction was interrupted by the War of the Triple Alliance and only completed decades later, inaugurated in 1936. The neoclassical façade with its dome and columns gives it a solemn, elegant presence on Plaza de los Héroes. Inside rest the remains of Paraguay’s most revered figures, including Marshal Francisco Solano López, other national leaders, and unknown soldiers. It serves both as a mausoleum and a symbol of remembrance. A highlight for visitors is the changing of the guard ceremony, performed by the Honor Guard. It’s dignified and formal — though not as elaborate as the spectacles at Buckingham Palace or similar sites — it adds a sense of living tradition to the memorial. Notes The site is compact — 20–30 minutes is enough to take it in. The guard change usually happens every couple of hours, we were lucky to get but not sure of the exact schedule Great photo opportunities: the white dome, flag against the sky, stained glass, and the guards at attention all make striking images. It is good to the stop here with a walk to the nearby Metropolitan Cathedral, Plaza Uruguaya, or nearby historic streets.

Templo de San Buenaventura - Yaguarón

This is Just 50 km south of Asunción, the Franciscan Church of San Buenaventura in Yaguarón is one of Paraguay’s most extraordinary colonial treasures. Built between 1755–1772 by Franciscan friars with the hands of Guaraní artisans, it represents the finest example of Barroco-Guaraní, where European baroque forms meet indigenous imagination. From the outside the church looks simple — whitewashed adobe walls, heavy wooden doors, and a detached timber bell tower. Step inside, and it’s a revelation: the soaring golden altarpiece, covered in leaf and intricate carvings of saints and angels, dominates the sanctuary. The painted wooden ceiling, alive with red, blue, and ochre geometric patterns, seems to dance above you. Side chapels, pulpits, and confessionals are adorned with ornate carvings and icons, each piece reflecting both Catholic symbolism and Guaraní craftsmanship. It is the kind of interior where every close-up photograph reveals another layer — a carved face, a floral motif, a flash of color — all blending into an atmosphere that feels almost otherworldly. We were especially grateful to the caretaker, who kindly kept the church open for us beyond the usual 6 pm closing, as we were driving back toward Asunción. Having the space to ourselves in the evening quiet, with the carvings glowing under dim light, made the experience even more unforgettable. This church is not only a place of worship but also a living time capsule of Paraguay’s cultural fusion. For anyone interested in art, architecture, or history, it is an essential stop — modest on the outside, but magical within.

We didn’t stay at the hotel but visited the gallery to experience shopping in Paraguay and found Paseo La Galería to be one of the most impressive malls in Asunción. The architecture is striking, with a multi-level design that feels both modern and inviting. A garden walkway connects the levels, giving you the unusual experience of walking outdoors while still inside a shopping complex. The mall features a broad mix of international and local brands such as Zara, Calvin Klein, Adidas, Puma, Levi’s, and Tommy Hilfiger, alongside Paraguayan boutiques. The food court is varied and stylish, offering everything from casual fast food to more refined dining. We also came across Yogurberry, which is essentially an identical clone of Red Mango in the USA — same concept, just under a different name. For families, there’s a kids’ arcade and a cinema on the top floor, making it easy to turn a shopping trip into a day’s outing. One of the highlights is the glass sash elevator that runs from the upper levels of the mall over to the hotel side, giving a futuristic, tunnel-like experience with sweeping views as you ride. Overall, this is more than just a shopping mall — it’s a full destination to shop, eat, stroll, and be entertained. Definitely one of the highlights of modern Asunción.

For most, the best way to enjoy it is simply to drive slowly (and hope no one behind you is in a hurry!) under the natural archway, letting the play of shadow and sunlight create the magic. But there was never a rail bridge across the Paraná River — the only way to cross into Argentina was by ferry to Posadas. We visited the Jesuit Mission of Tavarangue in the evening for the 7:00 pm light presentation. The setting itself is impressive — a vast open space with the unfinished but majestic church at the center. At night, the ruins are illuminated and create a dramatic backdrop for the presentation. Three local guides explained the history and background, though entirely in Spanish, while we stood among a busload of excited schoolchildren. The atmosphere was festive, though for non-Spanish speakers it was hard to follow. Eventually, we gathered inside the church area, where a film was projected directly onto the restored church wall. It was mostly imagery with a Spanish narration, which wasn’t very clear to us, but still gave a sense of reverence and history. The cold evening air added to the atmosphere, though standing in the open grounds with wind made it feel colder than the thermometer suggested. About the site: Tavarangue was one of the last Jesuit reducciones, begun in 1706 but left unfinished after the Jesuits were expelled from Paraguay in 1767. The church — inspired by St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome — would have been one of the largest in the region had it been completed. Today, the site’s vast arches, detailed stonework, and open plazas remain a striking testament to the Jesuit vision of community, blending European design with Guaraní culture. It is now part of Paraguay’s UNESCO World Heritage sites, along with Trinidad.

We visited at 2 different times and hence the review is split into 2 sections. First the night visit after dark: We arrived at the Jesuit Mission of Holy Trinity around 8 pm, just as the locals were settling in with their evening routines and the TV tuned to the pre–World Cup game atmosphere. The site itself is atmospheric at night, with floodlights illuminating the ruins, but the overall experience left us a bit wanting. Our group joined a couple of buses full of schoolchildren from Asunción and nearby towns. The guide launched into an enthusiastic narration — entirely in Spanish. For us, we sorely missed the modern version of the “Babel fish” (forgive the Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy reference!) just to keep up. Without translations, much of the history and storytelling was lost on us. We had expected a light show or video projection, which didn’t happen that night, so the visit was mostly walking through the ruins in the glow of the spotlights. To be fair, the structures and walls are impressive and well preserved, and even in the dim light you can feel the weight of history. Unfortunately, the weather didn’t help — at 57°F with rain and wind, the cold felt much sharper than the thermometer suggested. In short: For Spanish speakers: this can be a moving and educational evening experience. For English speakers: unless you come with a translator or during the day when more context might be available, it’s best to take a short walk, admire the ruins, and save the deep dive for a better-timed visit. Here is the review continued for the daytime: Visiting the Jesuit Mission of Holy Trinity in the morning made all the difference. The experience began with a short film (with English subtitles) that set the stage and gave clear context to everything we had seen the previous night. Our guide, Christian, then walked us through the remarkable history of the Jesuits — missionaries from the Society of Jesus who, in the 17th and 18th centuries, created settlements called reducciones. These were carefully planned communities where art, architecture, music, culture, and even astronomy were taught and valued. Unlike many other colonial efforts, the Jesuits placed less emphasis on evangelism and more on protecting and educating the Guaraní people, offering them refuge from exploitation while fostering a communal way of life. At their height, these missions became centers of faith, learning, and creativity. The site itself is expansive and well restored. We explored the imposing stone church, cloisters, main plaza, bell tower, second church, and rows of “Indian houses.” Each section brought to life the scale and vision of the reductions. The open grounds stretch wide, giving a sense of the mission’s former vitality. Practical notes: when we visited, the temperature was just 52°F with wind and damp air, and it felt much colder. The open fields mean the chill bites harder, especially after rain. A jacket and good walking shoes are highly recommended, as the grass can be wet and the terrain slightly uneven. In daylight, the ruins reveal both their grandeur and humanity — more than stones, they tell a story of cultural fusion, resilience, and the Jesuit vision of a just community. Truly a must-see UNESCO World Heritage site in Paraguay.

Cerro Lambaré is one of those places that feels like it should be a top tourist spot in Asunción but hasn’t quite reached its full potential yet. The hill rises above the city, crowned by a monument that dates back several decades. The monument itself is striking — large stone figures and carvings, with a definite old-world grandeur. Unfortunately, there’s no clear signage at the site to explain its history or even the name, which makes it a little confusing for first-time visitors. From the top, the views are expansive: you can make out the horizon stretching endlessly, with faint glimpses of the Paraguay River, its islands, lagoons, and even the Argentine border. Less scenic, but very real, is the view toward the landfill (“trash mountain”) and its layered terraces — a reminder of both the challenges and contrasts of the area. The setting has a lot of character but could benefit from some upkeep and interpretation. Still, as a green escape from the city with panoramic views, it’s a worthwhile stop if you have an hour or two. We visited for a half day trip with a Sunset drink (essentially a package that combines a glass of wine - tickets for the boat ride and funicular. The location is absolutely stunning — with views that stretch across the lake, rolling green meadows, and Alpine ridgelines that are reminiscent of the Dolomites. The resort is accessible by a scenic ferry ride from Lucerne followed by the historic Bürgenstock funicular, Switzerland’s first of its kind, which takes you directly to the resort level. A must-do while visiting is the Hammetschwand Lift (€18 round trip), Europe’s highest outdoor elevator, which offers panoramic views and a thrilling ride to a dramatic viewpoint above the cliffside. The layout of the resort is elegant and open, with a cliff walk trail, dining terraces, and luxury spa facilities. While we didn’t stay overnight, the sunset drinks package gave us access to the funicular and a well-curated dining experience with local wines and excellent service. Great for a half-day or full-day trip — serene, scenic, and perfectly Swiss.

This was Our first stop to Peja tour. Gadime (Marble) Cave in the village of Gadime e Ulët. Legend has it the cave was accidentally discovered in the 1960s by a villager named Asllan, whose construction tool slipped into a crevice. A cultural treasure in the heart of Gagauzia Finished a wonderful, immersive visit to this museum founded by Kara Choban, a Gagauz poet who dedicated his life to preserving his people’s identity. The museum gives a deep dive into Gagauz history — from daily life, weddings, and traditional clothing to religious practices and social customs. Our guided tour lasted about an hour and half, and ended with a live performance of a traditional courtship song, with the performer in full Gagauz dress. We learned how the Gagauz people — though of Turkic origin — maintained their Orthodox Christian faith, historically used the Greek script, and have kept their unique language and cultural roots alive through centuries of migration and foreign rule. Don’t miss the charming light blue church with golden onion domes just outside the museum — a perfect backdrop to this deeply authentic experience. Definitely worth the drive from Chișinău! We visited the Manuc Bey Mansion as part of a day trip and were surprised by how much there is to see. The main house looks like a French chateau, and a bunch of rooms have been refurnished with new pieces that match the period style, which makes it feel pretty authentic. Tromsø Airport is a small but efficient (when it works) facility with straightforward access to the city center. While Uber availability can be challenging, local taxis or the city express bus (around 125 NOK per person) are reliable alternatives. The airport features automated check-in kiosks, though the security process can be slow due to the need to remove all electronics. Overall, it’s functional and convenient for its size, but plan for extra time at security. One of the biggest problems with the airport is the lack of any airline staff. We had a tough issue of the airline (Transavia) not recognizing the valid ticket issued by Delta .. despite going over all the details and working with the Delta agent on the phone for nearly 1 hour, they wouldn’t honor (Delta reissued the ticket with the new numbers). The airport staff just raised their hands saying we can’t talk to Transavia. Very stressful situation. Automated kiosks for the luggage would not accept the luggage over 20kg forcing us back to the line almost making us miss our flight.

It attracts a large number of visitors throughout the year, especially on Tuesdays and during festivals or Ganesh Chaturthi, etc. Siddhi Vinayak is an important religious epicenter and represents a significant cultural heritage since the early 19th century. There is a security gate, but it does allow you to carry mobile phones at present. Hawkers and beggars is a perpetual problem as you approach or exit.

As we entered the Residency complex, the weight of history was palpable. The ruins, with their bullet-scarred walls and cannon-damaged facades, spoke silently of the siege and the fierce battles that took place here. It was a surreal experience, stepping over the same grounds where so much had happened, trying to imagine the events that unfolded in this very place. We took our time meandering through the extensive grounds, each turn and pathway revealing another piece of the story. The main Residency building, along with the treasury, the church, and the various outlying pavilions, each had its tale of courage, survival, and defiance. Despite the ruinous state, the beauty and the resilience of these structures were undeniable. We couldn't help but stop frequently, capturing the essence of this historic site through our camera lens, keen to preserve the memory of our visit. The tranquility that now surrounds the Residency contrasted starkly with its turbulent past. The serene gardens and open spaces around the ruins offered a moment of reflection, a space to ponder over the events that had shaped the course of Indian history. It was a reminder of the peace that eventually follows even the most chaotic chapters. Our visit to the museum within the Residency complex was equally enlightening. The artifacts, documents, and photographs on display provided a deeper insight into the 1857 uprising, adding layers to our understanding of this significant period. It was fascinating to see the relics and the memorabilia preserved so meticulously, each piece telling a story of its own. In summary, our quick visit to the Residency was was mesmerizing. It was a journey through history, filled with moments of contemplation, discovery, and appreciation. Born in 1853 in Senegal, Ahmadou Bamba was a Sufi religious leader and the founder of the Mouride brotherhood (Muridiyya), one of the largest and most influential Sufi orders in West Africa. He was seen as a threat by the French and was imprisoned and exiled with a number of miracles that only helped to spread his influence further. The Grand Mosque in Touba is now a symbol of Bamba's legacy and the Mouride brotherhood. It is a place of pilgrimage, particularly during the Grand Magal, a festival commemorating Ahmadou Bamba's return from exile. Didn’t spend time elsewhere like the Library or the Cemetery dues to our time constraint, but would highly recommend this visit. For ladies visitors, you need some long skirt or a wrap around the trousers and some covering on the head is a must. Also, the females can’t enter the main foyer unfortunately per customs. Make sure to go around the whole perimeter to appreciate the grandeur.

The food court on the second floor was without many options and had long lines (Pizza hut was closed and so was the other cafe - only Burger King and the Agave Bar were open) because JetBlue had given vouchers for its cancelled (“delayed”) flight and everyone was trying to get something from the Agave bar at 10 am! There was 1 “sleepy” lounge that accepts Priority Pass and can provide some sanctuary from the crowds.

The Baba and Mei statue in Suriname is a poignant and beautifully crafted monument that pays homage to the first Indian immigrants in the country. This is right next to the Presidential Cabinet building. This sculpture captures the essence of the struggles and hopes of those who made the arduous journey in the 19th century (June 5, 1873), seeking a better life. I learnt that a similar statue was unveiled on the Suriname Ghat by the River Hooghly in Kolkata, India, signifying the deep historical connection between the two nations). We hadn’t given much thought to Suriname until recently - this is one of the last few countries in South America that we had not visited - when we started to make our plans, the connection to (East) Indian population became clear and it was certainly intriguing to us. This statue represents the journey from India to Suriname but also symbolize the enduring links formed over decades. Standing before either monument, one is moved by the profound narrative of cultural integration and heritage. With many folks whose names are distinctly “Indian”, sites like these are a must-visit for anyone interested in the rich, intertwined histories of Suriname and India.

A great hiking option on the Big Daddy dune (2nd highest at 320m or roughly 1000’). Walk along the ridge to the top, enjoy the gorgeous views and descend fast by quick “cycling motion” on the steep but soft sandy slope from the top to the deadvlei clay pan with the dead trees telling tale of the landscape over the last million years. Walk back to the car parking area for about 1km. Overall 5 km (3.2 miles). Was able to see a couple of Oryxes grazing as we walked up the hill. Walking in fine sand is harder than harder surfaces and there are steeper parts testing your lung capacity. In general doable for anyone with ‘can do’ attitude and no vertigo concerns. Carry water. To drive here you need robust 4x4 SUV not just any car as we saw struggling drivers stuck on the sand road. Restrooms at the parking lots. Put this on your bucket list!

New Jersey Performing Arts Center (NJPAC)

We had an enjoyable experience at NJPAC. The musical performance was excellent, enhanced by beautiful sets, fantastic lighting, and perfect acoustics. The theater was accessible and accommodating for our wheelchair-bound companion, which we greatly appreciated. Concession lines were a bit slow but that's expected at such events. One thing that struck us was the lack of visible masks, a concern in these times, although it's not a reflection on the theater itself. Parking was reasonably good, albeit it could have been slightly more organized, especially in the secondary area across the street. Overall, we recommend NJPAC for its quality performances and solid amenities. We did observe a couple of hiccups with the staff. There was a delay in getting in at one of the entrances because of some party’s tickets - seem to take almost 10 minutes when it would have been possible to let other people behind them to use the scanner to get inside while the issue was being sorted out. Also at the end there was a rude gentleman who blocked us from taking pictures as we were exiting - it would have take 10 seconds but he insisted in standing in front of us between the person with phone and us … 😡 overall the staff was friendly though.

I recently had the pleasure of staying at the Hampton Inn near Istanbul International Airport (IST), and I must say it was a refreshing experience that exceeded my expectations. One of the standout features of this Hampton Inn was its modern common areas. The lobby was tastefully designed, featuring contemporary furniture and a welcoming ambiance. It was evident that attention had been given to every detail, creating a sleek and comfortable space for guests to relax or catch up on work. The overall design of the hotel offered a refreshing departure from the cookie-cutter properties often found in the USA. The breakfast at this Hampton Inn was another highlight of my stay. The variety and quality of the food exceeded my expectations. From fresh fruits and pastries to a selection of hot items, there was something to suit every taste. I especially appreciated the local touches, as the breakfast included traditional Turkish dishes alongside the usual international fare. It was a great way to start the day, and I left the breakfast area feeling satisfied and energized. In general, the Hampton Inn near Istanbul International Airport offered a refreshing take on the staid cookie-cutter properties commonly found in the USA. The staff was attentive and friendly, always ready to assist with any inquiries or requests. A couple of members of the team, Mustafa and Çagri (night manager) deserve a mention for their extraordinary efforts and friendliness. The rooms were clean, comfortable, and well-appointed, providing a pleasant space to unwind after a long day of travel. One minor drawback was the limited on-site amenities, such as a fitness center or a swimming pool. However, considering its location near the airport, this was not a major issue for me as my primary focus was on convenience and comfort during my short stay. Also, the lack of hotel shuttles to and from the airport is noticeable, but it was not a great problem given that the taxi cost is less than €10.

Göreme Open Air Museum

When I visited the Göreme Open Air Museum in Cappadocia, Turkey, it was like stepping into a different era. Nestled amidst the unique and intriguing 'fairy chimney' formations, this UNESCO World Heritage site struck me as a fantastic marriage of nature's charm and human creativity. Our visit started with rain but cleared as we started walking to make it a great one. The museum is a big monastic complex carved right out of the region's soft volcanic rock, offering an expansive network of ancient cave churches, chapels, and living quarters. The frescoes in these ancient structures impressed me immensely, with their vivid colors and detailed depictions, most of which have been remarkably preserved over the centuries. Remember to wear comfortable shoes when visiting, as the museum demands a fair bit of walking and climbing. It was great to peek into early Christianity in Cappadocia. I would highly recommend this place to anyone visiting Turkey. The combination of fascinating history, the spiritual aura, and the unique geological formations makes it an unparalleled destination.

Hierapolis Theater is a Greco-Roman theater, part of the Hierapolis ancient city in Pamukkale, Turkey. The theater is one of the largest such amphitheater in Europe accommodating about 15,000 spectators in its heyday. It features an ornate stage building with several statues. Although we were not allowed to go to the stage, it was clear that it’s in a great condition. The day was perfect to enjoy the magnitude of the structure … since we were visiting white travertine terraces, we planned to enjoy the Hieropolis and this spot had a stunning view of the surrounding landscape.

Kaklık Mağarası ve Yüzme Havuzu

Underground cave with flowing water over the limestone travertine deposits gives a unique, somewhat eerie feel. There is an elevated pathway to walk in a loop (descending steps followed by ascending to reach back at the top). The water flowing over the pathway is bound to get your shoes wet, so remove them at the top and go bear footed as we did or wear flip flops. There is a distinct smell of sulphur (rotten eggs) as you enter the area - minor inconvenience that you need to put up with. There is a pond near the entrance with small turtles. It may take a while to spot them but once you do you will find hundreds of them. He sure to enjoy them.

Honestly, we prefer to avoid Indian restaurants during our travels as there is always a hit-or-miss (rarely-a-hit-and-mostly-a-miss) proposition. However, based on good reviews and a proximity by chance, we decided to try Naan Bar and it exceeded my expectations in every way possible. The outside is humble as we walked in from the street - but the moment I stepped inside, the ambience was warm and inviting. The interior has a delightful fusion of traditional Indian décor with a contemporary twist, creating a welcoming & cozy atmosphere. We were impressed by selection of vegetarian dishes. Each dish was a harmonious blend of flavors, aromas, and great presentation. Naans (breads) were soft, fluffy, and perfectly baked, and were the ideal accompaniment to the vegetable dishes we ordered. One unique thing about naans is that they include 2 full naans in 1 order (this was the only time we have seen so) - in fact, we joked that the restaurant should be renamed to “Naan Naan”! The attentive and friendly waitress further enhanced the experience. She was not only knowledgeable about the menu but also eager to provide recommendations and answer any questions we had. Their impeccable service and genuine enthusiasm added a personal touch to our evening. We sat in the basement for a more quiet experience. Naan Bar is a true gem in Valletta, Malta, offering a remarkable dining experience that will transport you to vibrant streets of India - without any efforts (or the crowds!) From the inviting ambiance and friendly staff that augmented the food we ordered, every aspect of our visit felt outstanding. The Three Beauties near Ürgüp is a picture-perfect representation of Cappadocia's iconic fairy chimneys. There is also a large balanced rock formation at the top of the platform - but it’s not that interesting. More user-friendly signage would offer a balance between natural beauty and education would enhance the overall experience.

My recent visit to the Uchisar Castle will be appreciated by any history buff or traveler looking for a fascinating blend of natural beauty and historical narrative of the human existence within the rock formations. Don't forget your camera, because I found literally 100s of opportunities to for breathtaking photographs! Dating back to Byzantine times, the Castle has stood as a story of the region's history. Its labyrinthine rooms and passageways are carved directly into the volcanic rock, creating a unique maze that you can explore. It's fascinating to think about the many generations and civilizations that have taken shelter here. Would recommend to wear comfy shoes to fully appreciate this Turkish gem in Cappadocia.

It’s a good natural landscape with the pinnacles with peculiar shape - called Love valley because of the phallus like shapes of these formations strewn around in the landscape. Just like the naming, the panoramic spot has been turned into a pseudo-romantic — or rather cheesy, I should say — spot with heart-shaped frames and other love paraphernalia. Food vendors hope to make a living with fresh juices, coconuts, coffee, Turkish ice cream and corn stands. Unless you plan to hike through the area, 10-15 minutes should be more than enough to score your pictures, selfies, etc. Great hiking possibilities for 1-2 hr hikes. You can see the Red valley at a distance along with a glimpse of Cavusyn village.

There are thousands of pigeon houses carved into the soft tufa since ancient times and you see the panorama together with the spectacular views of the dovecotes. This restaurant has a Very strategic location in the Mellieha Bay. We stopped by for a quick bite and some coffee on a windy afternoon with furious waves in the bay. There was a display with fresh fish, but that’s not a part of our diet so we merely enjoyed the display along with a mini aquarium. Small airport - luggage came in fast enough. Plane was literally 100’ from the luggage area. We waited for all the bags to come through and afterwards they took all the passengers to another part of the airport where bags for people with International transfers were kept. This makes sense because the bags were not customs cleared by us in Istanbul (although passport control was crossed to get into the domestic part of the airport). The toilet facilities were in bad condition inside the luggage hall.

Nice location next to the Golden Sands beach - we found the style to be somewhat “dated” with older carpets and furniture styles. The distance to Gozo ferry terminal is about 20 minutes and closer to Mosta, St Paul’s Bay, and Mdina & Rabat. it is a bit farther away from Valletta, Three Cities, Sliema and the St Julian’s bay where more action happens. Apart from the old feel, the hotel is good. We had only the breakfast and some coffee snacks in the restaurants in the hotel and they were decent. Great view of the Golden Sands beach and close vicinity to the Ghajn Tuffieha Bay, a perfect location for the sunset. Popeye Village is close by but it is closed at the moment due to the damage in Feb ‘23 storm.

Very inviting ambience and the staff got us seated towards the sunset view on the deck. Great choice of cocktails/mock tails and food. Enjoyed the sunset and the light dinner/drinks. At sunset, there was a ritual with a gong and all the staff members lining up on the western end basked by the orange sky and the ragged cliffs in silhouette- very unique and interesting ritual to witness! Lots of positive quotes and spirit to go with the spirits we ordered … Highly recommend to enjoy the sunset at this location!

Heathrow for transfer is great in terms of amenities and shopping (especially true if you are into brand names and luxury goods - many items would be substantially cheaper theses days as compared to the US prices). The only issues I have are the security lines (inevitable but even during the transfer it is a bit annoying), as well as the lack of information about the gate (or even terminals some times) until about 1 hr before the scheduled time. Have used functional, but somewhat busy lounges of various airlines including British Airways, Virgin - and they have a great options for seating areas, food, coffee, juices, healthy and “unhealthy” (er… alcoholic) drinks.

A great place to visit to see this ice sculpting miracle with tons of ice to make up a great Ice village with ice-textured walls, columns, tunnels and some chiseled castle-like walls. Side activity like sleigh riding and snow tubing allows for fun family activities. Expected to see more sculpted shapes however. We were not sure with the recent rains and overall lack of snow this season might mean minimal action, but those fears vanished quickly. You have to book online and well in advance to get in. A few things to remember: • try to get early slot in the day. Entry time is strictly observed within a 30-min window but once inside, you can spend as much time. Earlier you would have less crowds if you are trying to take photos (why not!) • bundle up and get hand warmers and foot warmers for sure. It gets very cold and winds will make it worse. • it can be slippery in spots - if you have micro spikes it will help. Wait to wear them just after you enter as the parking area gets very muddy unless you have fresh snow.

This is a fairly small and under-developed airport - not much in terms of space, amenities or lounges. Gate area was crowded. In its favor the luggage handling wait times are small and staff is friendly overall. The immigration and customs was a bit slow but not too bad given that multiple US flights land just after noon. Exit was smooth as well. Rental car center is across the parking lot from the main building - a problem if it is raining. Fortunately for us it was a sunny day.

This is a strip of beach that is dotted by multiple restaurants - similar set of options for kayak, paddle board, massage - picnic tables in the water with service - eager staff all around. We ended up scouting the area but not spend much time - the distance from the main town to here is about 40 minutes by golf carts.

We went for Hol Chan Marine Reserve and Shark/Ray Alley Snorkeling tour. Guided snorkeling helps to point out turtles, fishes and sharks. Enjoyed the 3-hour experience … the tour operators will register with the Marine Station. Good viewing possibilities.

Park Central South Beach

Art Deco style hotel - originally Park Central. Location is its best virtue. Cramped rooms, slow elevators is a bit of a problem. Breakfast outside was awesome. Didn’t have a view of the park and beach so coart comment on those rooms that do. Our 2-queen room had little space to move around with our luggage for the trip. Great park and beach access. Parking and resort fees are added per day.

Sunset Celebration at Mallory Square

Perfect spot for sunset - minutes from the famed Duval St and buzzing with activities in around the sunset times. Cruise ships reduces the available real estate to watch the gorgeous sunset (weather permitting of course). Lots of boats, sailboats, jet skis, tiki boats dot the ocean with interesting props for your sunset pictures. Tightrope walkers, magicians, Jugglers, firewaters and lots of street food vendors galore.

Fort Zachary Taylor Historic State Park Beach

Not the greatest experience as a beach (it’s pebbly), but has a lot to offer - there is a cafe, beach umbrella rentals, picnic benches and shaded area to walk, we saw yoga sessions and other activities … entry fee $2.50 for walkers , cars $4.50 for 1, $7 for 2 etc as of this review in early 2023.

Space Center Houston

Power of collaboration on this life sized restored Saturn V. It’s massive and it had the largest engines produced (1.5 million pound thrust) - 5 of them to get the push for stage 1. Augmented Reality support to view the initial take off sequence and all the infographics is incredibly helpful to immerse into this historic period of space ventures. Artemis is the next frontier and can’t wait to see how it unfolds!

Working with Ranjani was one of the most pleasant experiences we had while planning the wedding of our daughter. When we started researching for the agency that would create a perfect invitation for the wedding, we came across many that could potentially offer the unique and personalized invite. It was a confusing and chaotic process UNTIL we chanced upon the Pink Whistle man. On the very first interaction, it became clear that Ranjani not only ‘got it’ but was creatively the perfect option for us to execute one of the most OBSESSIVE component of our wedding journey (which got fairly elongated due to the pandemic). Very happy to report that we were right and what was delivered was breathtaking. We could write many paragraphs of accolades for the team, but let me assure you with the one of the most important qualities that matter - the creative abilities (and the ‘zeal’) to get the best work product, ‘can do’ attitude, attention to details, willingness to listen, patience to handle multiple iterations, responsiveness and ability to handle all aspects of the production, and more. I wanted to connect to their system and there was some problem.
