Torres del Paine at sunrise

The three granite towers turn from grey to pink to gold in roughly twelve minutes — if the clouds cooperate, which they do perhaps half the time. The trick is to be at Mirador Base Torre before 6am and to have made peace with the possibility that they won't appear. The waiting is part of it.

A condor directly overhead

Three-metre wingspan. Barely moving. Riding the thermal above the pass as if demonstrating that the landscape was built for them, not for us. You don't photograph it. You just watch.

The Perito Moreno glacier

Five kilometres wide. Sixty metres above the water. Advancing into Lago Argentino at roughly two metres per day. You hear it calve before you see it fall — a crack like artillery, then a slow rolling into the turquoise lake. There is nothing like the scale of it.

A puma on the open pampas

Torres del Paine has the highest density of habituated pumas in the world. The guides here read tracks, know territories, have names for individuals. A sighting — even a distant one — rarely takes more than two days. A close one is possible. Both change you.

The estancia asado

A working sheep estancia in the Magallanes region. A whole lamb slow-roasted over fire — the asado al palo — while the gaucho explains three generations of land and weather. The wine is basic. The conversation is not. It is the most honest meal in South America.
